The Rissho Ankoku Ron and the Year 2009

The Rissho Ankoku Ron (Securing the Peace of the Land through the Establishment of the Correct Buddhist Law) is one of Nichiren Daishonin's most important writings.  On July 16th, 1260, at the age of 39 the Daishonin submitted it to the most influential member of Japan's ruling clan.  A month later His home was burned down and a year later He was exiled for the first time.

In those days, the Japanese were besieged with frequent natural disasters, epidemics, and other sufferings and it was Nichiren Daishonin's immediate intention to inform the leader of the country that the root cause for the turmoil was the widespread acceptance of Buddhist beliefs that contradicted the Buddha's true intentions.  Modernly, the treatise serves as a time-honored blueprint for peace that implicitly expands the ensemble of misguided faiths to all beliefs throughout the world that contradict the Buddha's intentions, as carefully preserved by Nichiren Shoshu.

To commemorate the 750th anniversary of the Rissho Ankoku Ron and to bring attention to the contemporary application of its message, Nichiren Shoshu is planning a pilgrimage to the Head Temple Taisekiji for all members in 2009.  Also, consistent with the aspiration to establish a lasting peace through embracing the correct Buddhist Law, High Priest Nichinyo Shonin,  the 68th consecutive successor to Nichiren Daishonin, has affirmed  a goal set by the 67th High Priest to double the number of those who will attend.  This would be twice the number of believers who attended the initial 750th Anniversary Tozan in 2002, which commemorated when Nichiren Daishonin chanted Nam-myoho-renge-kyo for the first time and publicly urged others to follow.

(Prayers for the accomplishment of a successful anniversary)
